Tornado warning issued July 21, 2022. National Weather Service
The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for parts of Franklin, Middlesex and Worcester Counties Thursday afternoon through 4:15 p.m.
Radar indicated some cloud rotation, the service reported.
Affected areas are Orange, Athol, Phillipston, Petersham, Templeton, Winchendon, Gardner, Westminster, Ashburnham, Fitchburg, Townsend and Ashby.
A severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Orange moving east at 30 miles per hour at approximately 3:17 p.m., NWS said. Dangers include half-dollar-sized hail and flying debris.
At around 3:30 p.m. weather spotters reported trees and wires down in Montague, Wendell, Erving and Warwick.
The storm is predicted to be near Winchendon and Royalston around 3:45 p.m. and Gardner around 3:50 p.m. Westminster and Ashburnham should see the storm around 4 p.m. and Lunenburg and Ashby around 4:10 p.m.
Residents are encouraged to take cover immediately by moving to a basement or interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and avoid windows. If you are outside, or in a mobile home or vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter.
